Traditionally, there’s not much overlap between the real estate world and the not-for-profit sector. But you might be surprised to hear that when these two industries get together, something amazing can happen. Agents of Change (AoC) is a company that matches clients with the best real estate agents for them, harnesses revenue from real estate transactions, and then directs it to not-for-profits. This unique process gives buyers and sellers of real estate a new way to improve their real estate outcomes while supporting their favourite NFP in the process.
When I was first introduced to AoC, I was the Managing Director of Calgary Opera. My initial response to the AoC model was a big “wow!” followed by another huge realization: AoC offers NFPs a chance to do something unique. Instead of the usual approach where we’re almost always asking for something, now we have the chance to give something of significant value to our network of supporters – not only a better real estate experience, but a way to turn those transactions into revenue for the whole community.
And our timing couldn’t be more urgent. The NFP sector faces a lot of uphill challenges. Traditional funding sources are declining. Alberta’s economic downturn has impacted revenue. And more donors are insisting on a new kind of shared-interest/power relationship where they are treated as more than passive cheque-writers.
What can a NFP do to pivot in the face of a constraint, decline, and change? The most entrepreneurial organizations are starting to look for unconventional opportunities to advance their missions. And that’s where Agents of Change comes in.
Back in the spring of 2017, we convened our first meeting of our NFP partners to talk about how we could move forward in a way that benefits everyone. Participants said that they viewed the collaboration with AoC as a new way to engage with community, bring value to their supporters, redefine how they do business, and empower the whole sector.
For Paul McIntyre Royston, CEO Calgary Public Library Foundation, AoC gives their supporters a way to give in a way they never dreamed possible. “This opportunity represents a fresh, exciting way to tap into new markets, engage new demographics, and invite people to support our vision in a substantial way,” Paul says. Cathy Coutts, Executive Director of Making Changes, adds that the AoC partnership can give their network the assurance that they will be well taken care during their real estate experience while helping to fund raise for the organization.
AoC’s NFP partners care about making an impact and care about the people supporting their efforts. They know that offering their supporters the best real estate experience available in the market through a unique customized matching process is just one way they can participate in the new social economy that benefits themselves, their supporters, and ultimately, the community we all care about.
Now that these two industries are getting to know each other, big things are starting to happen. And that’s why your favourite not-for-profit cares about helping you find your next Realtor®.
